Problem #1 — your back gives out around mile 80. Every ride.
If you ride long distance you know the mile. Mine was somewhere between 80 and 100. Right on schedule my lower back would start talking — not screaming, just a slow familiar ache telling me the clock was running.
What's actually happening: in a riding position there's a gap between your lumbar and the seat, so the muscles around your lower spine work continuously to hold the curve. What didn't solve it
- Rider backrest. Useful to lean on. But leaning on something and having your lumbar held in position are different things — the moment you sit upright it's behind you doing nothing. I still hit the wall at mile 80.
- Generic kidney belt. Right concept, wrong execution. Elastic compresses; it doesn't hold the curve. After 30 minutes it shifts, after an hour it's rolled at the edges.
