I Had Back Surgery in 2021. My Doctor Told Me to Stop Riding. I Found Something Else Instead.

Rick D. · 58 · 25 years touring · Road Glide Ultra · Texas · 8 min read

In 2021 I had L4-L5 surgery. Disc degeneration, two vertebrae, a summer in recovery, and a surgeon who told me in plain terms that I should stop riding motorcycles.

I nodded. I waited for him to leave the room. Then I started planning my next ride.

I'm not telling anyone to do what I did. But I'll tell you what I found, because it changed every ride I've done since.

Problem #1 — your back gives out around mile 80. Every ride.

If you ride long distance you know the mile. Mine was somewhere between 80 and 100. Right on schedule my lower back would start talking — not screaming, just a slow familiar ache telling me the clock was running.

What's actually happening: in a riding position there's a gap between your lumbar and the seat, so the muscles around your lower spine work continuously to hold the curve. For the first 40 minutes you don't feel it. By mile 80 they've been working without a break for over an hour. They fatigue, your posture collapses, and the pain starts.

It isn't your age and it isn't your fitness. It's physics.

What didn't solve it

  • Rider backrest. Useful to lean on. But leaning on something and having your lumbar held in position are different things — the moment you sit upright it's behind you doing nothing. I still hit the wall at mile 80.
  • Generic kidney belt. Right concept, wrong execution. Elastic compresses; it doesn't hold the curve. After 30 minutes it shifts, after an hour it's rolled at the edges.
  • More stretching, more breaks. Manages the symptom. Doesn't touch the cause — and it turns a ride into a series of interruptions.

Problem #2 — the tailbone. This is the one nobody warns you about.

Your sit bones and your coccyx were never meant to carry your full upper-body weight against a hard surface for hours. On a bike they do exactly that, plus every bump the suspension doesn't absorb.

After surgery this got dramatically worse for me, because I'd lost the tolerance I used to have. Mile 40 became the new mile 80.

Central tailbone channel and honeycomb gel structure

The central channel is the part that mattered for me — the tailbone bridges the gap instead of carrying load.

What actually worked

A honeycomb gel cushion with a central relief channel. Not gel on top of foam — a full grid of 400+ independent cells that flex sideways instead of compressing, over a channel that leaves the coccyx unloaded.

Two things changed on the first long ride. The mile-80 wall didn't arrive. And getting off the bike stopped being a production — no holding the bars for a minute waiting for my lower back to come back online.

My surgeon told me to stop riding. I found something that let me keep going. 25 years on the road, and I'm not done yet.— Rick D., 58, touring since 1999

To be clear: a cushion is not a treatment and it did not fix my disc. It removed the mechanical load that was making riding impossible. If you have a diagnosed back condition, talk to your doctor — then decide for yourself.

Questions riders ask

Will it fit my bike?
Yes. Universal adjustable straps and a non-slip base fit virtually any motorcycle seat — cruiser, touring, ADV, sport, 3-wheel and custom.
Will it change my riding position?
It adds about 1.3 inches. Not enough to affect your posture or your reach to the ground.
Does it slide around at speed?
No. The non-slip base plus the straps keep it locked down, including on rough roads.
Does it get hot?
No — that's the point of the open honeycomb. Air keeps moving underneath instead of being trapped like it is with foam or sheepskin.
How fast will I feel it?
Most riders notice the difference inside the first 10 minutes.
What if it doesn't work for me?
Send it back within 60 days for a full refund. No questions.
